Impact of the Crow
Every child who walks through our doors becomes family. A theatre gang, if you will. They learn from day one, how important they are to the whole. Every rehearsal ends with "Clap for yourselves", reinforcing the understanding that their hard work is what ultimately makes the show a success. Instilling a sense of pride and confidence in their ability, is what sets Upstart Crow apart from other traditional theatre companies. We audition to place children in the most successful role for them, finding the perfect fit and then building on that moment to even greater success in the future.
About 30% of our children have specific needs. They may be foster children, at risk, working through their own social and personal identity, on the autism spectrum, or in financial crisis, but they are always welcome. We celebrate diversity and inclusion, teaching young people what it means to be part of a cast of many. The links of the chain become stronger and the cast grows to depend on each other, raising everyone up equally.
That is the true impact of Upstart Crow. Not only creating critical thinkers, but caring individuals. Bullying doesn't exist here, only the desire to help each other. For some, this is home. Students who have graduated from the program, return to teach, mentor, volunteer and become arts advocates. We are a feeder system for local, regional and national community theatres. Our students are called upon for commercial work in television and radio. One in five go on to performing arts degrees in Universities around the country and have successful careers, because of the strength of this program. Parents tell us of the academic improvements, the ability to go from fear of speaking to a confident child taking on more challenges at school. We have seen the program work. Theatre makes connections for children. Our role in the community is to address the academic and creative development of every child through those connections. With your help every child plays a role and has the opportunity to succeed.
